Experience
Mr. Shurin has been a practicing attorney for more than forty (40) years. He has a very extensive general trial and business law practice. Mr. Shurin often serves as an arbitrator, mediator and special discovery master. He has been awarded Martindale-Hubbell’s highest “AV” rating for 25 years. He is included in the “Super Lawyers” list.
Major area of trial practice includes commercial litigation and arbitration representing both plaintiffs and defendants in all aspects of commercial matters. Mr. Shurin has successfully tried many jury and non-jury cases throughout Missouri and in the state courts of Florida, Kansas, Arizona, Illinois and Texas; the United States Claims Court; the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey; the United States District Court for the District of Kansas; and the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri. He has appeared before the Eighth Circuit and Tenth Circuit Courts of Appeal, the Missouri Court of Appeals and the Missouri Supreme Court.
Business practice consists of: (1) representation of numerous small businesses and medical groups as "general counsel," in connection with mergers, acquisitions, leasing, contracts, franchising, litigation and employee related matters; (2) representation of individuals and entities in employment-related matters, including interview practices, hiring, discipline and termination, and negotiation of employment and severance agreements, including executive and physician employment agreements.
Mr. Shurin has negotiated and drafted numerous contracts representing entertainers, sports figures, advertising agencies and advertisers and has provided legal services needed for sports, entertainment and charitable events worldwide.
Professional
Mr. Shurin was the Jackson County Delinquent Land Tax Attorney 1969-1970 and an assistant Jackson County Attorney 1971-1972. Mr. Shurin is admitted to practice law before the State Bar of Missouri, the State Bar of Kansas, the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri and the United States District Court for the District of Kansas. He is a member of the American Bar Association (Litigation and ADR sections), the Missouri Bar Association, the Kansas Bar Association and the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association.
About half of Mr. Shurin's time is engaged as an Arbitrator, Mediator and court-appointed Special Discovery Master. He is a member of the American Arbitration Association Commercial, Construction and Employment Arbitration and Mediation panels. He is also an International Mediation Institute certified mediator.
Professional Honors
Mr. Shurin was nominated by President Clinton to serve as a Judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri; in July 1995 Mr. Shurin requested that his nomination be withdrawn due to the delay in the nomination and confirmation process.
Mr. Shurin was selected by Ingram's Magazine as one of Kansas City's best commercial litigation attorneys in 2011 and 2012, and designated as a SuperLawyer in 2009 - 2012 by KC Magazine.
Education
Mr. Shurin received his law degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1968. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia in 1965, where he majored in Economics.

Mr. Shurin and his wife, Jill, enjoy international traveling. He reads biographies, World and American history and mysteries. He collects American political campaign buttons.
